In his lifetime, Edwin Eugene Armstrong was a telegraph operator, did farming for Frederick Thompson, and was the President of a Leather Company in Detroit. He started in the leather business first by manufacturing saddles, then harnesses, and then a full range of leather products. By April 9, 1930 he had retired. He enjoyed his retirement for eight years until his death in 1938.

He was the husband of Adeline Louise McCutcheon Cutcheon, daughter of Sullivan M. Cutcheon, Esq. of Ysilanti, Washtenaw, Michigan, USA. He and Adeline were the parents of three children: Phillip McCutcheon Armstrong, of Detroit, Katherine (James Montgomery) Acklin of Toledo, and Josephine (Charles F.) Hibbard of Detroit.
