Isaiah, Jr., married his cousin, Sarah Knowles, on February 10, 1804, in Columbia, Maine. He was 24 at the time. Out of ten of his children, he saw five die as young adults before he passed away. Sarah, too, was a major life loss, as she left him a widower after 28 years of marriage. He was a man well aquainted with grief.
