Walter Haynes was born in Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire, England, in 1583. He was one of seven children of John Haynes & Alice Lambert. He married Elizabeth, parentage unknown, about 1612, in England. The couple had six children, all born in England. When Walter took his family to New England, his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who was already married, remained in England with her husband, Roger Gourd. She later inherited the Shaston property.

The rest of the family, Walter, Elizabeth, John, Josias, Sufferance and Mary, sailed from Southampton on April 24, 1638 on the ship "Confidence", and arrived in Boston, Walter gave his occupation as linen weaver and his age as 55. Walter's son John had possibly come to Massachusetts the year before and stayed in Watertown with his aunt, Elizabeth Read. Also traveling with Walter, and listed as "servants", were John Blandford, 27; John Riddet, 26 and Richard Biddlecombe, 16. Another passenger on that ship was Peter Noyes, who would help Haynes govern the Town of Sudbury for many years. After spending a year in Watertown, in 1639, Walter was granted land in the new settlement of Sudbury. Haynes was elected to the first board of selectmen in 1639, and served for ten years. He represented the town at the General Court four different years. He was one of the first settlers to build on the west side of the Sudbury River, which house was probably the "Haynes Garrison" during King Philip's War.

Walter wrote and dated his will on May 25, 1659. In it, he mentions his wife Elizabeth, whose death was recorded in Sudbury on June 15, 1659, son Thomas "away from home", sons Josias and John, who is made executor, daughters Sufferance wife of Josiah Treadway, and Mary, wife of Thomas Noyes. He also disposed of a tenement in Shaston, Dorsetshire, England, willing it to the daughter who stayed in England, Elizabeth Gourd. Walter died in Sudbury on February 14, 1665, and his will was proved on April 4, 1665.

Walter was most likely buried in the Old North Cemetery in Wayland, which was the only nearby cemetery in use at the time. It was less than a mile from his home. No signs of burial have ever been identified on his family land. Unfortunately, there are no headstones extant at the Old North Cemetery before 1735
