Henry Woodward Augustine Pioneer, Soldier, and Public Official, was born in South Carolina in 1806.

He lived in Autauga County, Alabama for a few years then moved in 1827 to Texas and setteled in Ayish Bayou District
In 1832 he was appointed to a committee of fifteen to select the township of San Augustine, which was founded in 1834.
On November 11-1833 he married Cynthia in San Augustine, Texas.
At the Battle of Nachodoches on August 2, 1832, Augustine was Battalion Commander of the San Augustine regiment.
On October 17-1835 he raised a company in San Augustine
to join the Texas Volunteer Army.
He was one of the delegates from San Augustine to Consultation at Felipe in 1835.
In the First and Second Congresses of The Republic of Texas, Augustine servered as Senator from San Augustine.
He resigned his post on November 24, 1837.
Durning the Cordova Rebellion in August 1838, General Thomas J. Rusk Dispatched Major Augustine with 150 men to help quell the trouble.
While commanding a Company in The Cherokee War in 1838 Augustine took a Aarow wound in the leg which resulted in his leg being amputated.
By a Special act of Congress of The Republic Of Texas he was given a Wooden Leg.
He represented San Augustine in The House of the Fifth Congress 1840-1841, and was appointed to the Board Of Trustess ,San Augustine University on February 16- 1843.
After the death of his wife he and his children moved to
Polk County Tx. where he died in 1874.

Were not sure where Cynthia is buried in San Augustine Teaxas but believe she may be buried in the City Cemetery in a unmarked grave.

There are 3 Graves next to Henry that are his children one is Virginia Augustine Williams and two other Daughters who died very young One was Elizabeth and the other is Sohpie.
