Dick Berg was born in Omaha, NE to Einar and Louise Berg. He graduated from North High School and attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln until volunteering for the US Army where he became a pilot and a flight instructor, flying everything from the T-23 to the B-29. Dick was in the men's clothing business his entire life, beginning in the family men's clothing store, Berg Clothing until it closed in 1964. He then began a career with Kilpatrick's department store in Omaha. Kilpatrick's was bought out by Younkers and he transferred to Des Moines in 1976 as a men's clothing buyer. Dick's first retirement was in 1982 and lasted one year, when he rejoined Younkers at the downtown store selling men's clothing. His second retirement came with the closing of the downtown Younkers, and lasted a few months until he returned to the Merle Hay store. Dick continued selling clothing until health issues forced his third retirement in 2007. On April 20, 2011, Dick retired for the final time.
Dick is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years Linda (Swain), two sons, Richard (Becky) Elkhorn, NE, Paul, LeShara, NE, sister Sally McKenzie, Springfield, NE; three grandchildren: Pauline DeLaGarza (Patrick), Chicago, Matt Berg (Jen), Scottsdale and Erica Berg of Indianola. He dearly loved his grandchildren, Zoey Clausen, Iris DeLaGarza, Cameron Peterson, Caleb Peterson, Malie and Orlin Berg, brothers and sisters in law and many friends. Dick was a member of the Tangier Shrine Temple and Covert Lodge in Omaha.
