Betty Loueen Pates was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 16, 1917 to Christine Johnson Pates and Arthur Pates. The family moved to Council Bluffs Iowa when Betty was a baby and resided on Grace Street, where Betty’s sister, Barbara, was born. Betty graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and worked in Omaha at her aunt’s business, the “Better Letter Service”. She married Max Louis Anderson on December 22, 1940 and Max was inducted into military service in 1942. After he returned from WWII military service in Europe two children were born; Jeffrey Craig and Janette Susan (Anderson) Putnam. Betty had a beautiful, trained mezzo soprano voice and faithfully used her gift for many years to direct the choir at Grace Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs. She also sang in the choir and was soloist at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Omaha. For many years after her marriage she gave private voice lessons and performed in local musical theatre. Betty passed away Monday, April 6, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her children, Jeff (Jacquie) Anderson of Pella, IA and Jan (Ron) Putnam of Honey Creek, IA, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, her sister Barbara and her husband, Max, preceded her in death.
