James M. Lawson, a former resident of Brookneal, died at the home of his son-in-law, S. D. Umstead in Lynchburg Saturday morning January 29th, after a week's illness from grip, aged 69 years. Mr. Lawson was a native of Campbell county and had represented this county for two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. He was for several years a prominent and progressive citizen of Brookneal and took an active interest in all things that pertained to the building up of the town. He built and conducted the hotel now managed by Mrs. L. D. Harvey, and also owned a block of stores on the site now occupied by the Williams drug store, postoffice and bank, besides having other business interests. He was postmaster during the last Cleveland administration. His remains were brought to Brookneal Saturday evening and on Sunday taken to Hat Creek and interred in the family graveyard, the burial service being conducted by W. C. Walker in the absence of any available minister. Mr. Lawson's wife died about two months ago. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Barnes, of Christainsburg; Mrs. W. A. Rice, of Brookneal, and Mrs. S. D. Umstead, of Lynchburg.
