Vernon "Buddy" Welch
(May 11, 1925 - April 11, 2012)

Funeral services for Vernon "Buddy" Welch of Vaiden will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Carl Groves and Rev. Calvin Cosnahan officiating. Burial will follow in the Vaiden Cemetery in Vaiden, with military honors at graveside.

Mr. Welch died from complications of a stroke at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on Wednesday, April 11. He was 86 years old.

Mr. Welch was the son of the late William Dewitt and Connie Self Welch. He was a retired farmer and a member of Vaiden Methodist Church in Vaiden. He served as a
county supervisor for 22 years. Mr. Welch was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations and earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Douglas Welch; daughter, Vivian Welch; sister, Bess Hancock; and four brothers, Rufus Welch, Albert Welch, Dewitt Welch, and H. W. Welch.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Welch of Vaiden; one son, Vernon Dwight Welch of Vaiden; five sisters, Mae Chiappino of New York, Mildred Branch of Winona, Lorrine
Branch of Pensacola, Florida, Florrine Williams of Gulfport, and Martha Clark of Winona; one brother, Dennis Welch of Vaiden; and two grandsons, Timothy D. Welch and Joshua Lee Welch, both of Vaiden.

County mourns former supervisor

VAIDEN -- Vernon "Buddy" Welch was remembered as modest person and a dedicated civic leader for Carroll County.

Welch, the one-time Carroll County Supervisor, died last week at the age of 86 at University Medical Center in Jackson.

From 1972 until 1992, Welch was the Beat Five supervisor and played a major role in getting a new courthouse in Vaiden. Welch was also credited in playing his part in getting buildings for the Mississippi Department of Human ServiceS and the Vaiden Public Library, both on Lee Street.

"He was always proud of the new courthouse in Vaiden," Maxine Welch said. "He loved all the people and tried to help the best way he could."

Welch was a retired farmer and a member of Vaiden Methodist Church in Vaiden. He served as a county supervisor for 22 years. Welch was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations and earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

"I've known him all my life," Beat Five Supervisor RickIE Corley said. "He was very civic-minded, loved Carroll County and wasn't ashamed to stand up for the people in his beat.

Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton said Welch is a member of the Greatest Generation and was a Southern gentleman.

"He was humble as far as it came to his accomplishments, but he was a strong leader for Carroll County, particularly for the people in beat five," Stanton said.
