"Funeral services for William Eugene Dement, 78, native son of Oregon City and many years a resident of Astoria, were held at 2 P.M., yesterday at Oregon City. Mr. Dement died at his home, 139 Fourth street, Astoria. He was born in Oregon City in 1850, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Dement, who crossed the plains in 1845.
Mr. Dement, when a young man, was a purser on river boats operating between Portland, Astoria and Oregon City. He was married in 1873 to Ione Saffarans. Two years later he started a drug store in Astoria. He retired from active business a number of years ago.
Surviving are the widow; a son, Floyd Dement of Bend; a daughter, Mrs. Kate Armin, Seaside; a grandson, Walter D. Hamilton; two sisters in California and a brother in Walla Walla."
