Don L. Bivens, 79 of Clay City died unexpectedly October 22, 2010 in the emergency room at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

He was born July 18, 1931 in Clay City the son of Erza and Inez Sheer Bivens. He graduated from Clay City High School, Class of 1949. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

On August 23, 1958 he married Sharon Reedy Bivens. Together they raised their family in Clay City. He had worked at the Whitmer Tire Shop for several years and became the owner of the tire shop after Mr. Whitmere retired. Don was in the tire business for over 40 years. Not only did the tire shop provide service, it was also the spot for the "loafer's bench", a local gathering spot.

Don was active in the American Legion Post #225 and was currently serving as the financial officer. He served on the town board during the 1970's and always supported local business. He and Sharon are members of the Heritage Baptist Church.

He enjoyed having a vegetable garden and helped his wife do some of the canning. He enjoyed watching his son play sports and NASCAR.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sisters in infancy, Evangeline and Avangeline, and one brother Harley Dale.

Survivors include his loving wife Sharon Bivens of Clay City; one daughter Donetta Bivens Berlen and husband Kevin of Clay City; one son, Darren Bivens and Martha Lockett of Terre Haute; 6 grandchildren, Heather Devore (Cody), Jason Berlen, Jeremy Bivens, Seven Bivens, Jacari Lockett, and Ciara Lockett; one great-granddaughter Gwen Devore; two sisters Mary Bivens and Marjorie Miller (Kenneth) of Coal City; nieces, nephews and other extended family.


Funeral Information
Services will be held Friday at 1:00pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Tyra officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8.
