Carl Edward Watkins Sr.

The funeral for Carl Edward Watkins Sr., 65, of Bassett, who died April 8, 2012, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Redd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A wake will be held at the church from 12:30 p.m. until time for the service Friday.

He was born in Bassett on May 7, 1946, to Arthur Watkins and Kate Staples Watkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Jacqueline Parker, Doris Gray, Sheila Simmons and Sheldon Watkins.

He was a member of Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he was on the usher board and was a member of the King Jeremiah France Male Chorus and the mass choir.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Watkins; three sons, Carl Edward Watkins Jr. of Gastonia, N.C., Cedric Watkins of Bristow and Carl Edward Hagwood of Martinsville; one daughter, Montrea Shamane Hagwood of Spencer; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford Watkins and Rayford Watkins, both of Bassett; and eight sisters, Mattie Norman, Sharon Watkins, Bettie Bowman, Marietta Kirby, Barbara Watkins and Deborah Watkins, all of Bassett, Hester Hairston of Martinsville and Anita McIntosh of Roanoke.

Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
