Herbert was born in Horse Valley, Franklin Co. Pa. on Feb 13, 1883, the fourth child of B. Frank and Susan E. Jones Guyer. He moved with his family to a farm known as the George Himes farm in Cumberland Co. Pa. He helped his parents on the farm and attended the Shippensburg State Normal School for two years. Herbert then went to Lancaster to take up Telegraphy, after which he took the position in the field on the railroad. He married Bessie Grissinger in 1908. children were; Kenneth 1909 - 1957, Dale 1911 - 1971, Treva 1920 - 2000.
Herbert developed rheumatism in his feet and hand while working for the railroad and for years was quite crippled and handicapped in his work. He moved his family to Baltimore, Maryland, where his brother-in-law was the owner of the Capitol Cake Co. Here he was given the position of head cake baker. Herbert held this job until he retired in 1955 and on Nov. 5, 1959 Herbert passed away.
