Born in Denver, Colorado in Feb 1899 to Danish parents, immigrants from Denmark. She had an older sister who died shortly after birth and a younger sister, Laura born in 1902. She and her sister were raised in a Danish-American community and couldn't speak English when they entered first grade. Johanna graduated from West High School in Denver. She married THOMAS CHRISTIAN JUHL (also a Danish-American) in 1921 and they had 3 children.

Johanna was very social. She was a joiner and a confidant to many loyal friends.
