Mrs. Bertha Bain Young, 39, was struck and fatally injured Friday afternoon as she stepped in the path of a sedan driven by Luther Ellison.
Mr. Ellison and his wife were driving north, enroute to the fair in Caruthersville, when the victim stepped from a car in which she was riding, dashing across the road to close a door she had left open in her sister's home, stepping in the path of the Ellison car. The Ellison car was ditched in an effort to miss the unfortunate woman. Evidence at the coroner's inquest indicates that she did not see the car which was within 20 or 25 feet of her when she started across the road. She was struck by the left side of the car as it went into the ditch, thrown to the concrete fracturing her skull, she died within a few minutes.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church about two o'clock, Rev. Sadler, pastor of the local Baptist Church officiating. Interment was made in Mount Zion Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the German Undertaking Co.
The deceased is survived by her father, J.T. Bain, one brother, T.K. Bain, of Steele; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Allison of Holland and Mrs. Will Bain of Steele; and two sons, Leroy, 19, and Clarence, 4.
