Collin Whitney Hamshar, 17, died at home, leaving a large hole in the lives of his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother Deborah Hamshar; father, Richard Hamshar; grandmother, Doris Walton; brothers, Brian, Rob, and Clayton; sister Doris Gatewood; nieces, aunts, uncles, special friend and cousin, Joyce, and numerous other loving family members. Collin also left behind many friends who care about him.

He was a talented musician and honor roll student and a junior at Fluvanna High School. As part of a musical family Collin naturally fell in love with music, working exceptionally hard to learn to play the tuba, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar, drums, and accordion. He was a committed and enthusiastic member of the symphonic, jazz, and marching bands in middle and high school-playing the tuba since before he was able to lift it, and working to become an all-district tubist for the past two years. When not playing music, Collin was likely immersed in one of his numerous hobbies: reading comics (e.g., Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert), drawing, building things, weightlifting, practicing boxing on the heavy bag, contra dancing, watching and quoting "Family Guy", tending the chickens, advocating on behalf of the propane industry, cracking jokes (often for pure self-amusement), rapidly devouring piles of food, or playing board games with the family.

As a beloved friend and family member, Collin will best be remembered for his eccentric sense of humor and love for fun and games. Those who have gotten to truly know Collin have come to adore his trademark jokes and mannerisms, and will reflect on and recite them for life.

Collin's memorial service was held Sunday, April 15, 2012, at the Central Elementary School Auditorium in Palmyra. A community dinner followed at the Collinswood Community Center on Route 6 near Scottsville.

Donations may be made to a memorial fund established in Collin's honor that will be used to promote and support music education in Fluvanna County. To donate, mail checks payable to "Collin Hamshar Memorial Fund" 228 Dobby Creek Road, Scottsville VA 24590.
