Herbert, who was raised at 61 Avenue D, Claymont, Delaware, served as a Technician Fifth Class, Infantry, Ninth Army, U.S. Army during World War II.

He died of wounds received in action, in Germany. He had served with the Army for two years and ten months at the time of his death and was decorated with a Purple Heart.
