A retired director of recreation with BREC and former major league baseball pitcher, he died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 1996, in Baton Rouge. He was 79, born March 6, 1917, in Ben Hur, Va., and a resident of Greenwell Springs. Visiting was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home chapel, 1:30 p.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. John Merck. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by wife, Helen Adams Cress, Greenwell Springs; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Jane Cress, Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Johnny and Charlanne Cress, Olive Branch; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Rick Schmaus,Watson; three granddaughters, Teri Ann Cress, Durango, Colo., Kathy Ann Cress, Olive Branch, and Lindsey Bofinger, Watson; and two grandsons, Mark James Cress of Jackson Hole, and Walker Cress of Olive Branch. Pallbearers will be Walker Cress, Mark Cress, Rick Schmaus, Vernon Browning, Maurice Browning and Morris Summers. He was a member of Central Lodge No. 442 F&AM, co-founder of Baton Rouge Kids Baseball Clinic, founder of Greenwell Springs High School Rodeo, former member of LSU baseball team and LSU basketball team, member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and former pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. He was a longtime baseball scout with San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros.
