Funeral services for 81-year old Mrs. Alma Whittemore Smalling will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Potsdam at 10:30 AM with the Rev. James Barnes, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery on Wellesley Island. Friends may call at the Seymour Funeral Home on Friday afternoon and Friday evening from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. If friends desire memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice and Palliative Care, 6805 U. S. 11, Potsdam, New York 13676. Mrs. Smalling died at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton on April 7, 2012. She was a resident of Potsdam.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Norbert V. and Sheila Smalling of Rochester, NY, Kent and Carla Smalling of Essex Junction, VT, and Scott E. and Mary Jane Smalling of Hannawa Falls, seven grandchildren: Jason, Janelle, Chandler, Jordan, Steven, Patrick and Scott, and three great-grandchildren: Audrey, Brean and Caiden. Alma was predeceased by her husband C. Norbert Smalling, a brother Warren Whittemore, and a sister Shirley Gullick.

She was born in Ogdensburg, New York on September 23, 1930 the daughter of Van C. Whittemore and Bessie V. (Goodrich) Whittemore. Alma graduated from Canton High School and attended the University of New Hampshire. She married C. Norbert Smalling on September 15, 1950 at the Church of the Thousand Islands in Alexandria Bay, NY. The couple moved to Potsdam in 1969 from Troy, NY, when "Norb" joined the Clarkson College Administration staff.

Alma worked for Clarkson University as a secretary for many years, in both the Alumni and Athletics Departments as well as at Potsdam Central High School. She was a member of the Potsdam United Methodist Church, Clarkson Women's Club, and she served on both the Potsdam Museum Board and the Potsdam Airport Commission Board. Alma enjoyed antiquing and spending time with her family.
