Allen lived his early life at "Longwood" his mother's parent's home in Prince Edward County, VA., at several naval bases and finally at "Mildendo" after the close of the war between the states. In the fall of 1864 he was selected for the last class of Acting Midshipman who trained aboard the Patrick Henry in the James River next to Richmond and was a member of that class when it accompanied and guarded the Confederate "gold train" as it fled south ahead of Gen. Lee from Richmond in April 1865. His father, a naval surgeon, was also on the train after his ship, the Virginia II, was scuttled. After being parolled, Allen returned to "Mildendo" where his father took up managing his family's plantation. Allen home studied but due to his parent's financial straits was unable to attend the Univ. of Virginia as his parents had hoped. Instead he took up the offer of his brother-in-law, Joseph C. Hutcheson, to move out to Texas and apprentice under Capt. Hutcheson until Allen would be able to join him in the law firm. Subsequently he became a successful member of the Hutcheson and Carrington Law firm in Anderson and Houston, Texas. Allen tragically lost his first two wives and all except one of his children. He himself was killed while visiting his brother-in-law's family at their summer home on Signal Mountain, Tenn. when his horse bolted while going over a bridge and threw him from the carriage. He was survived by his wife, Kate Botts Carrington and his baby daughter, Kate Lightfoot Carrington.
