He went to Warren County, Illinois, as a young man, and came to Allen County, Kansas, in the spring of 1868, settling as a homesteader where he has lived until his death. He was united in marriage in Warren, County, Illinois, with Lydia Ann Dodge in 1837, who died in 1859. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. One son and two daughters died in infancy. The oldest son, John A. Dawson died on July 23, 1862, a Sergeant in the Union army.
