Television reporter and producer
Born in Harlem NY to Jamaican immigrant parents; Gilbert R. Noble, an auto repair shop owner and Iris Noble,a teacher. He attended City College of New York and was drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict.
He began his broadcast career in 1962 with radio station WLIB-AM in New York City as an announcer and was hired by WABC-TV in 1967 as a reporter and weekend anchor after his reporting during the Newark riots. He was a correspondent of the program "Like It Is" in 1968, took over as host in 1975 and became its producer from 1986 until 2011. "Like It Is" became an iconic Black affairs and cultural show, covering such topics as drug abuse and producing documentaries on people such as W.E.B Du Bois, Malcolm X, Ella Baker, Dr.Martin Luther King, Adam Clayton Powell, Jack Johnson and Charlie Parker. Noble won 7 Emmy Awards, 650 awards for community service and 5 honorary doctorates. in 1981 he wrote his autobiography "Black Is The Color Of My TV Tube" recounting his experiences in broadcast journalism. Noble suffered a severe stroke in July of 2011. In September of the same year, it was announced that he would not be returning to host "Like It Is" and would be discontinued. Gil Noble died from complications of his stroke on April 5, 2012 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean, 4 daughters, 1 son and 8 grandchildren.
