13-Year-Old
Youth Drowned

Charles (Chuck) Adams, 13- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Adams, drowned Friday afternoon in deep water at the Eddyville Sand Pit about a mile north of Eddyville.

He had gone swimming with two companions, Duane Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cook and James Ferguson, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Ferguson Both boys are 15 years old.

The boys said that Chuck either dived or fell from a pipe strung across the water pit. He had been walking along the pipe holding onto a wire above the pipe He did not call for help.

The boys heard a splash and saw Adams come up once. Ferguson said he dove deep into the water and grabbed him but he slipped from his grasp before being hauled upon the barrel pontoon. Ferguson applied artificial respiration while Cook swam about 300 feet to the bank and ran to the sand plant office where Carl Higgins was notified and he called the Eddyville Rescue unit. Jan Vance brought the boy and Ferguson to the bank in a boat.

The Mahaska County Sheriff office was called and went to the scene in the Mahaska County rescue unit. The officials had most praise for the boys for keeping their heads and getting the boy out.

Charles Adams was the son of Harold L. and Velma June Wills Adams and was born Jan. 3, 1953. The family moved to Eddyville several years ago.
