Roman Catholic Pope. Born Alessandro Ottaviano De' Medici, he was a grandnephew of Pope Leo X. Leo XI became Supreme Pontiff on April 1, 1605. Already very ill, he died 27 days later. Although he had ruled so short a time, he managed to lower taxes and send help to the Hungarians in their struggle against the Turks.
