Roman Catholic Pope. The son of powerful Roman noblewoman Marozia, he was selected in March 931 to succeed Pope John X, who had lost a power struggle with Marozia and Guy of Tuscany and was executed. Only twenty-one at the time of his ascendance to the Papacy, his mother influenced his every decision until her overthrow in 932. From that time until his death in December 935, he exerted only spiritual duties, and the political power, a hallmark of Popes both before and after him, was actually held by Alberic II, Count of Tusculum.. The only real accomplishment his papacy was his support of the Congregation of Cluny which, in the long run, benefited the Church immensely.
