Memorial services were held at the United Methodist Church in Paradise, California, for historian and long-time school teacher Ruby Swartzlow who died in a Chico hospital August 20, 1981 at the age of 78 years. She was born July 18, 1903 in Fond du lac, Wisconsin, and moved to Paradise from Omaha, Nebraska, in 1955.
A graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, she received her master's degree in history from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Her teaching career covered 56 years of teaching in high schools in Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Oregon, and Nebraska before moving to California.
Since 1960 Mrs. Swartzlow taught adult education classes in Northern California History at Paradise High School until her health failed, forcing her to end a long teaching career.
She was a member of the Paradise United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, the Butte County Branch of the American Association of University Women, the National League of American Pen Women, the Paradise Fact and Folklore Society, Butte County Historical Society and the Colusi County Historical Society.
Survivors are her husband Carl, a daughter Joan McDougal of Dillon, Montana; two sisters, Mae Knepp of Madison, Wisconsin, and Alice Schouten, of Fond du lac, Wisconsin; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Reverends Dallas Turner and Gerald Sumners officiated at the services with private interment in the Paradise Cemetery. – Transcribed by M.
