A retired gynecologist, Dr. H. Fred Moffitt, 90, of the United Presbyterian Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 3409 Baker Blvd., died at 7:15 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 1982, in Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born in Arch Spring, Dec. 23, 1891, the son of Samuel and Clara (Lindsay) Moffitt, and June 9, 1923, in Altoona, married Ethel M. Sawtelle, who died Oct. 1, 1975.
Surviving are two nieces and a nephew, Mary Irene Moffitt of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Jeanne Marie Strong of Norton, VA., and Dr. John S. Moffitt of Morgantown [sic-Martinsburg], W. Va., and eight grandnieces and grandnephews.
Dr. Moffitt was a 1910 graduate of Altoona High School, and a 1913 graduate of Pennsylvania State College. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1917. He served his internship at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital at Pittsburgh from 1917 to 1918. He was licensed to practice medicine in the state Aug. 17, 1918.
Dr. Moffitt was commissioned a first lieutenant in the United States Medical Corps in 1917 and entered active service in July `9`8, serving in France until 1919. During World War II he served on the selective service draft board from 1940 to 1947.
He worked as assistant to Dr. Rice in Hastings from July to December 1919 and began his practice in Altoona in January 1920. In 1922 he opened an office 1115 12th Ave. where he practiced until his retirement in 1971.
He was on the staff at the Altoona and Mercy hospitals. At the Altoona Hospital, he was an associate in surgery from 1920 to 1927, associate in gynecology from 1927 to 1938 and chief of gynecology service 1938 to 1960.
Dr. Moffitt was a member of the national and state medical associations. He was a former member of the Blair County Medical Society, where he served as president in 1936.
His memberships include the Commission on Cancer, Pennsylvania Medical Society, inducted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1927 and was on the executive board of the Pennsylvania State Cancer Coordinating Committee.
He helped establish and was chairman of the Cancer Vaginal Cytology Coordinating Committee for Pennsylvania in 1956 and 1957. He was a former member of the Wainwright Tumor Clinic Association, serving as president in 1956-57. He helped organize the Blair County Cancer Society in 1946 and was president of the local chapter from 1948 to 1960, with the exception of one year. He was named president emeritus of the chapter in 1960.
He became a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society 1947 and served on its executive committee. He became president of the state division of American Cancer Society from 1951 to 1953. He served on the national board of the society from 1954 to 1957.
In 1960 he was the recipient of the Sword of Hope by the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society, the highest honor given a volunteer in the society.
Dr. Moffitt was a member of the Delta Tau Delta College Fraternity at the Pennsylvania State College, Tau Chapter; Logan Lodge F&AM; Harrisburg Consistory; Jaffa Temple; Royal Order of Jesters; Blairmont Country Club; and the Spruce Creek Rod & Gun Club, where served as board president from 1942 through 1971.
He was a member of the Broad Avenue United Presbyterian Church.
