Pope. 106th successor of Peter, born in Rome in 792 A.D. He would be remembered for having crowned Alfred the Great as King of England, the first English sovereign to be so honored and blessed by Rome. Hadrian tried and failed to keep peace among the Carolingian kings. An old man when elected, Hadrian II died in November or December 872.
