Son of Russell and Charlotte (Gillett) Scarritt. Educated at Yale (1865-1866) and Amherst (1866-1869, graduated 1869). Graduated (1872) from Union Theological Seminary. Received D.D. from Lane University, Lecompton, Kansas, 1880.

Ordained in the Presbyterian church at Olathe, Kansas in April 1877. Pastor of several churches included Second Presbyterian Church in Auburn, NY. In 1898, entered the Episcopal ministry. Assistant rector of St. George's Church in St. Louis, Rector of Trinity Church in Bridgewater and on staff of clergy at the Church of the Advent of Boston.

Married 5 June 1877 to Elizabeth Mariner at Olathe, Kansas. Five children: William, Louise, Enid, Gwendolen and Linda.
