Passed Away Suddenly at Augusta Sunday Morning
Augusta, February 24 - The death of State Senator Joseph Y. Hodsdon of Yarmouth, who had been ill in this city from appendiettis for about 10 days, occurred at 2 45 o'clock this morning. For a few days past there had been a mark improvement in his condition, but Saturday morning unfavorable symptoms became manifest and there was a steady change for the worse until the end came. Senator Hodsdon is survived by a widow and one son, both of whom were by his bed-side. The remains will be taken to Yarmouth tomorrow for burial, and the Maine Central has tendered the family the use of two special cars, which will be attached to the ten o'clock train going west. A delegation composed of Gov. Hill, Hon P.O. Vickery, Hon J.H. Manley and Hon E.C. Dudley will escort the remains to the railroad station. Notice of the death will be taken tomorrow in both branches of the legislature and a committee will be chosen to attend the funeral. By direction of Gov. Hill four of the State House employes will accompany the remains to Yarmouth. Joseph Y. Hodsdon was born in Portland in 1837, where he attended the public schools. During the past 80 years he had been engaged in the shoe manufacturing business, and was eminently successful. From 1869 to 1880 he operated a factory in Portland, as a member of the firm of Caldwell & Hodsdon. In 1880 he removed to Yarmouth where he established a factory which was conducted under the firm name of Hodsdon Bros. & Co. Later the concern was incorporated as the Hodsdon Shoe Company. Three years ago Mr. Hodsdon built a large modern factory in Yarmouth which has since been doing a profitable business. Mr. Hodsdon was interested in other enterprises and was a director in the Yarmouth Manufacturing Co. The deceased was a member of the Yarmouth Universalist church, was a mason and belonged to other secret organizations. His home in Yarmouth is one of the finest country residence in Cumberland county. Mr. Hodsdon was a life long Republican and two years ago was selected to the state senate from this county, and re-elected again to the present legislature.
