According to Verla Bailey (whose sources of information she has indicated include the Perry County Sun, census records, and the obituaries of PVT Lawrence's parents and his brothers), PVT Joseph Lawrence's parents were advised that he was severely wounded in action. Later they received a telegram stating that he had died from wounds he received in action. He was a member of the 354th Infantry 89th Division and was among the first contingent of soldiers who had trained at Camp Funston. PVT Lawrence was survived by his parents, four brothers (Fred, Adolph, Harry, and Ernest) and one sister (Lorene).
