The Daily Herald, Provo, UT, Monday, May 10, 1954, pg 2:

"Retired Rancher Succumbs at 86 --- John William Baum, 86, retired rancher of Provo, was found dead in his home, 63 N. 2nd W. this morning.

"Investigating officers said death was from natural causes.

"Mr. Baum was born April 26, 1868, in Provo, a son of George and Eliza Ann Allen.

"He attended the Provo schools and married Myrta Haws. They lived in Provo until 1900 when they moved to Idaho where he homesteaded large tracts of land and helped to pioneer the Ashton, Ida. area. Mrs. Baum died at Ashton in 1905 when their last child was born. In 1925 Mr. Baum moved to Provo.

"He was a member of the LDS Church.

"He was also a charter member of the Provo Elks Lodge 849.

"Surviving are four sons and two daughters, Murray and Oliver Baum of Ashton, Ida., George Baum, Drummond, Ida.; and Newell Baum, Provo; Mrs. Fred (Ora) Nielson, St. Anthony, Ida.; Mrs. Charles (Vadis) McComber, Pocatello; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister, Orson Baum, Ashton Ida.; Jacob and Elmer Baum, Provo; and Mrs. Dora Cluff, Provo.

"Funeral services will be announced by the Berg Mortuary pending word from his family."
