J.R. OTTO DIES SUNDAY Auto-Owners Treasurer Is Heart Attack Victim Stricken At Lake

James R Otto, 50 treasurer of the Auto Owners Insurance company died early Sunday evening at Edward Sparrow hospital, following a heart attack suffered Thursday at his cottage on Crystal lake. He was removed here Friday morning by ambulance from the Montcalm county resort. His residence was at 775 Collingwood drive, East Lansing. Mr. Otto who was widely known in national and state insurance circles, was born August 10, 1895, in Ashley, where he lived until completing high school in 1912. He then came to Lansing and attended Lansing Business university for two years after which he joined the Boston and Old Colony Insurance companies' western department here as assistant cashier. After serving 15 months in this capacity he joined the old Capital National bank as assistant auditor, serving successively as auditor and assistant cashier until joining the Auto Owners organization in 1923 as bookkeeper. He later was appointed auditor and in 1936 was named treasurer of the Auto Owners company. Active in Civic Affairs Mr. Otto was elected a director of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies in 1944 and was also treasurer of the Underwriters Finance corporation, a subsidiary of the Auto Owners company. He at one time served as secretary-treasurer of the Michigan Air-Way corporation, and was a former president of the automotive section of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. Taking an active part in civic and business life in the community, he had served as director of the McLaughlin hospital until his resignation about three weeks age, and he was a former member and president of the East Lansing board of education. He was a member of Lansing lodge No 33. F. and A.M., Capital Chapter No 9. R.A.M. Lansing Comandry No. 25, Knights Templar, Lions club, City Club of Lansing, and the Country Club of Lansing, and for many years was junior warden of St Paul's Episcopal church. Survivors include the widow Edith; five sons, James Jr, with the United States coast guard in New York City; Allen with Patton's Third army in Europe, Jack serving in the navy at Shell Beach, La.,Richard and Thomas at home; a daughter Mary Lou; four sisters Mrs Theron Jones and Mrs Edmond Valentine, Lansing, Mrs Carl Danby, East Lansing and Mrs Joseph Kamesia, Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y. and three brothers Edward, Lansing, Willis D., of California, and Emmet of Idaho. The body was removed to the Estes-Leadley funeral home where it will remain until services Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from St Paul's church, Rev George Selway officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Knights Templar will form an escort at the service.
