Marie C. Briggs, 88, a long time resident of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 8:05 a.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Fort Madison Health Center. Born September 30, 1923 in Omaha, NE, she was the daughter of Frank & Frances Copponi Sapienza.
On March 16, 1946 she married Claire M. Briggs in Omaha, NE. He preceded her in death on January 28, 2008.
Mrs. Briggs worked for many years as the Credit Manager at the Valley Clinic in Fort Madison. She was also a homemaker and had worked as an administrative assistant in the Sheaffer Pen Company Public Relations Department. Mrs. Briggs also served her community and was active in many local organizations. She was involved many years supporting the Tri-State Rodeo ticket sales, the Sacred Heart Altar & Rosary Society, and was a Cub Scout leader. She was a recipient of the YMCA Verla Cox award for outstanding assistance to youth in the community. Active in the Lee County Democratic Party she and her husband received several awards for their service. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include: one son, John (Dianne) Briggs of Waukee, IA; 2 grandchildren, Angela (Justin) Cary of Adel, IA & Josh (Jennifer) Briggs of Urbandale, IA; 3 great grandchildren, Kaylee, Parker & Jaxson; and 2-sisters, Lucy Wrabetz and Dorothy Bollinger of Omaha, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Mary Jane Henton.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 with the family to receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. all at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Mark P. Spring officiating.
Burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, IA.
