FAMILY HELD
The peaceful cemetery with two graves is located in the Harbor Ridge gated community on private land, on the south side of the Catawba River (now Lake Rhodiss). Arrangements may be made by calling the NC Room of the Morganton Public Library for visitation requests and directions. The closest address to the small cemetery is 304 River Walk Dr. Connelly Springs, NC. The road is paved and the cemetery is on a grassy ridge, with trees on one side and the water can be seen in the distance, past a house.
In 1936, the graves were accessed off of Malcolm Blvd. (SR 101) and was 1/2 mile down a gravel road. There were many logging roads and the land at that time was owned by the Crescent Land and Timber Co. Wife Agness was buried first in 1830 at age 49 and is next to her husband, Joshua B. Ballew, who outlived her by 46 years. Joshua and Agness had at least 17 children and Agness died in childbirth.
The headstone for Joshua reads:
"Joshua Ballew born July 10, 1771 died Febrary (sp) 16, 1868 aged 96 years 7 months 6 days" and was carved into a soapstone marker. The headstone in 2018 was worn smooth, being made of soapstone, it did not weather well.
The brush and overgrowth was cleared out as of May 2018. There were 4 piles of bricks that had been removed from atop the graves and what looked to have formed a small brick wall around the site. With concentrated effort, the bricks were dug out of the earth and replaced per original footprint, which included being over the graves themselves. The ground is very uneven. Harbor Ridge has placed a white picket fence around the gravestones.
Information on the stone inscription was courtesy of the Morganton Library in the NC Room. Taken from a 1936 cemetery census record kept in the Ballew file #1.
