Politician. First US Senator from Illinois, 1818-1829. Author of the Maine-Missouri-Thomas Compromise Bill, commonly known as the Missouri Compromise. The part Senator Thomas played in the enactment of this unique legislation is avouched for by James G. Blaine in his book "Twenty Years of Congress".
