'Mormon Song Bird' Dies
Katherine Gillespie Johnston, who, under the name of Kate Gillespie, "the Mormon Songbird," headlined the entertainment at Park City's Dewey Theatre during the early years of this century, is dead at age 93. A Dewey Theatre poster from 1911 advertised Miss Gillespie as: "Park City's leading singer and they all take a back seat." The "Mormon Songbird" was born July 10, 1889 in Tooele, Utah and died April 23, 1983 in Medford, Oregon. She enjoyed an illustrious career singing in the grand opera houses and theatres of Utah's booming mining and even sang at the dedication of the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake. In 1916, Kate Gillespie, settled down with Hazard Hawkins Johnston of Midland, Texas, They lived in Tooele for some time before she and H.H., as Mr. Johnston was known, moved to Arizona and later San Diego. Mrs. Johnston is survived in Park City by a great nephew, Mr. Rick J. Hall. From "The Park Record" newspaper page 1, 5-19-1983
