Major League Baseball Player. Originally signed by the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent in 1964, the 6' 200 pounder began his career as an outfielder. It was not until the Braves' organization converted him to the mound that he found success on the diamond. He was drafted by the expansion Montreal Expos on October 14, 1968, as the 45th pick in the draft. He made his major league debut for them on April 11, 1969. In 8 games he went 0-3 with a 4.60 ERA. 1970 proved to be not only his breakout year, but also his best season, as he compiled an 18-11 record with a 3.60 ERA, good enough to garner him National League Rookie of the Year honors. After seasons of 10-18 in 1971 an 7-13. In 1972 he was traded back to Atlanta on February 28, 1973, for pitcher Pat Jarvis. Morton rebounded nicely in Atlanta where he strung together three winning seasons for extremely mediocre Braves teams. After winning only four games in 1976, he was traded by Atlanta along with Adrian Devine, Ken Henderson, Dave May, Roger Moret, and $250000 cash to the Texas Rangers for outfielder Jeff Burroughs. Released by Texas on April 1, 1977, he finished up his career in the minors, playing for the Phillies and Pirates organizations. On April 12, 1983, Carl Morton died from a massive heart attack in the driveway of his parents home in Tulsa Oklahoma. He had just finished jogging with his son. He was only 39 years old. A side note of passing was the fact that 1970 proved to be the most unlucky in the history of the Rookie Of The Year Award. 1970 American League Rookie Of The Year Thurman Munson died in a private jet crash in 1979. It is the only time in baseball history that two Rookies of the year from the same year would come to premature endings.
