Carl Thayer, 71, Well-Known Cresco Man Dies Friday

Carl Thayer, 71, well known retired Cresco farmer, died in the Cresco hospital of carcinoma Friday.

Funeral services for Mr. Thayer were held yesterday afternoon in the Cresco Methodist church with the Rev. Mr. Roche of Decorah, in charge. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery. The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Bradley Funeral home.

Carl Henry Thayer, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Thayer, was born on the Thayer farm near Bonair, July 26, 1885. He attended the Howard Center school.

When Carl was 11 years of age, his father died, leaving him to help his mother operate the home farm.

On June 14, 1916, Carl was married to Mary Evans of the Bonair community. Mr. and Mrs. Thayer became the parents of two children, June and Keith, who survive.

As a young man, Carl joined the Bonair Methodist church in which he was an active member. He was both Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for nearly 25 years. Later he became a member of the Cresco Methodist church and the Friendship Sunday school class.

In 1947, Mr. Thayer and his family moved to Cresco, where they since lived.

Surviving Mr. Thayer, in addition to his two children, June, now Mrs. Charles Calhoun of Ames, and Dr. Keith Thayer of Iowa City, and five grandchildren, Bruce, Neil and Mary Calhoun, and James Carl and Gregory Thayer.

Preceding Mr. Thayer in death were his wife, Mary, and a sister, Lillian Morgan.
