Irene Ranck Christman, 89, of Harrisburg, entered peacefully into rest on December 9, 2007, at Landis Homes, Lititz, after a lengthy illness.

She was the only child of David G. and Kathryn E. (Mentzer) Ranck of Bareville, PA.

She is survived by her sons, Robert R. and wife Marjorie Miller, John D. Christman, and two grandchildren, all of Harrisburg. She was the widow of Russell B. Christman.

Irene graduated from New Holland High School (1935) and Lebanon Valley College (1939) with graduate studies at Eastman School of Music and the University of Pennsylvania. She taught vocal and instrumental music and served as Supervisor of Music in the public schools for 43 years, first at Warwick Twp. and later in Middletown and Central Dauphin School Districts. She was the author of several books and manuals for the music classroom.

Among her many professional accomplishments, she served over 40 years as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Music Educators' Association, and as the Chair of the National Council of State Executive Secretaries of the Music Educators National Conference. She organized and served as the first President of the Dauphin County Music Education Association. For her service to the music profession, she was awarded a National Service Award from the Music Industry Council in 1991, having received similar recognition from the Music Educators National Conference in 1990. In addition, she served several terms on the Board of Hershey Symphony Orchestra. Her love of music lives on in her thousands of students, many of whom remained lifetime friends.

She was a former member of the Eastern Star, Pilot Club and the Ephrata American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a long-time member of Pine Street Presbyterian Church and of its choir.
