Katherine Howard was the eldest surviving legitimate daughter of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. There is no clear evidence naming her mother however the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography States that Anne of York, having borne her husband 4 children, had no surviving heirs at the time of her death in 1511, which strongly suggests that Elizabeth Stafford was Katherine's mother.
In 1529 Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, is said to have kidnapped Edward Stanley Earl of Derby and married him off to a Howard lady. Modern research suggests that this was the Duke's own daughter the otherwise unknown Katherine, who has, in the past, been conflated with Dorothy Howard, the Duke's sister. Since Edward was almost of age it is likely that he was complicit. They were married before 9 December 1529.
On 21 February 1530 a pardon was issued to the Duke of Norfolk and the Earl of Derby for procuring the marriage of the Earl to Katherine Howard without the consent of the King who was still Edward's guardian. Curious then to note that Norfolk had bought Derby's marriage from the King for 3500 marks.
Eustace Chapuys reported that the Duke of Norfolk's eldest daughter died of the plague on 15 March 1530. This cannot refer to his daughter, Mary, who married Henry FitzRoy Duke of Richmond in 1533.
The Complete Peerage does not record the marriage to Katherine Howard nor does the Dictionary of National Biography which conflates Frances and her aunt, Dorothy Howard Edward's second wife. Lady Katherine Howard (died 15 March 1530), possible second daughter, briefly married to Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby, her father's war
