Sarah Foster emigrated from England, and came to Utah with the ill-fated Edward Martin Handcart Company in 1856. Many in the company died on the journey. She suffered from severe frostbite. The cold and lack of food caused many families to loose loved ones that were buried along the way. Their faith kept them going until they were rescued and escorted into Salt Lake City, Utah.

She was married to Thomas Jackson Schofield, as his second wife in October 1857.

Sarah had two children. Ellen Lovina Schofield was born Jan 14, 1860. William Jonah Schofield was born March 19, 1862. Sarah died of pregnancy related illness on March 26, 1862.
