Mary married John Henry Hayes January 18, 1881 in Black Hawk County, Iowa. They had eleven children. Her parents were both from Ulster, Northern Ireland.

Her father James Shannon was born about 1825 in County Tyrone; he died December 6, 1862 in Lester Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Her mother Catherine Duffy was born about 1833 in County Armagh; she died July 8, 1877 in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa.

Mary's parents wed in Boston, Massachusetts June 5, 1857 and they had two children, Mary and Archibald Joseph. Catherine Duffy Shannon wed Michael Woods February 9, 1865 in Black Hawk County, Iowa after James Shannon's death. Catherine and Michael had five children, Sarah A (Shannon), Rosanna (Reed), James E, John P, and Michael J Woods.

Catherine's parents were Patrick Duffy and Alice Burns, both born in County Armagh, N. Ireland. Listed with land owners in Lester Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa in 1887, Patrick Duffy owned a combined 55 acres of land.
