Samuel Harrison Smithee was the son of Reuben Pickett (b.1819 Tenn) and Bethany Goatcher (b.1821 Ala) Smithee. He was the grandson of John (b.1773 NC) and Sarah Carmichael (b.1778 NC) Smithee.

Samuel served 4 years in the Confederacy, he is listed as a Private serving in Shaver's 7th Arkansas Infantry, Company D. C.S.A. assigned as a Teamster.

Samuel married Emily Fortenberry October 27, 1867 in Jesup, Ark. Their children were:

Emily died March 26, 1886 north of Denton, south of Gainesville Texas, Samuel never remarried. She was buried in the Moss cemetery in Cooke County Texas, around Gainesville. Samuel was in Plainview Texas in the spring on 1898 where he met up with his two brothers, Andrew and Winfield as they were relocating from Strawberry Arkansas to Texas.

Samuel moved with his children to Altus in Oklahoma Territory where he owned and operated S.H. Smithee and Son Groceries (Old Greer County, Oklahoma Territory) until around May 1901 (a couple of months after the passing of his son, Bandy) where as he sold his stock of hardware and groceries to a couple of local merchants- From "The Plain Dealer" Newspaper, Altus, Old Greer Co., Oklahoma Territory May 28, 1901.

Samuel was visited by his nephew Claud in May of 1901, Claud and his father owned and operated a mercantile store in Silverton Texas, shortly after his visit the newspaper published a story of Samuel moving his family to Texas. In Hale Center Texas, Samuel operated S H Smithee Groceries

Samuel was laid to rest in Portales New Mexico in New Hope Cemetery.
