Gertrude Claire Alston, the 4th of four children born to Wallace and Gertrude [Huber] Alston, was born April 30th 1924. Named for her mother, Gertrude served in the Womens Army Corps during World War II; enlisting at 18 on October 18th 1942.

Gertrude was married to Herbert B. Sullivan on July 3rd 1946, but this union ended in divorce in 1977.
