Roman Catholic Pope. Born Francesco Xaverio Castiglioni. Upon his accession to the throne, he ordered all his relatives to resign positions they held in the Church in order to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. The character of Pius VIII was mild and amiable, and he enjoyed a reputation for learning, being especially versed in canon law, numismatics, and Biblical literature.
