Attorney and President of the School Board
He was survived by his wife, who was Mrs. Ruth Potts of Dallas before her marriage, his mother, Mrs. Wendel Spence, Dallas; a brother, Charles M. Spence of St. Louis, and two sisters Mrs. J. Harrison Hines of Atlanta and Mrs. Linda Spence Brown of Columbus, Ohio.

He was educated in Dallas public schools, received a B.A. at the University of Texas in 1914 where is was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and a member of Phi Delta Theta. He received a bachelor of laws degree from Columbia University.

During World War I he attended officers' training camp at Leo Spring, and was attached to the Thirty-Sixth Division.

His major civic involved was his work as a member of the Dallas Board of Education, serving 12 years, the last two as president. According to Superintendent Dr. Norman R. Crozier, Spence's interest was in "the teaching personnel and curriculum than in the purely physical side of the educational plant." His work on the board aided in establishing public health education, the introduction of the junior high school systems, high standard of scholarship and adequate pay for teachers.
