Sister Brinker was Holy Name fixture
By Kevin Cole

Sister Florence Brinker prowled the Omaha Holy Name High School library like a proud mother — pausing to praise book selections and gently encouraging students working on special projects.

"There are two kinds of smart people in this world," Brinker liked to tell her students. "Those who know something, and those who know where to look it up."

Brinker, 92, died Tuesday while in hospice care at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, 7400 Military Ave. A Mass will be celebrated in her honor at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in the convent's chapel.

Brinker was one of six children raised by Walter and Florence Brinker of Detroit. She took her first vows with the Servants of Mary Order in 1937 and would have celebrated her 75th jubilee in July.

Sister Mary Gehringer, provincial for the Servants of Mary headquarters in Omaha, said Brinker received a bachelor of arts degree in English from the College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y., and a bachelor of arts in library science from Rosary College in River Forest, Ill.

Brinker taught and served as librarian in schools from New York to Colorado, including two stints at Holy Name, with the second coming from 1963 to 1975. At Holy Name, Brinker also taught mathematics, religion, reading and Latin.

Brinker, inducted into Holy Name's Hall of Fame in 2007, also worked as a pastoral minister at Omaha Marian High School for several years before retiring in 2002. In retirement, she returned to Holy Name each March to read to the kindergarten children.

"She certainly was a wonderful example of being a compassionate presence during her work with the pastoral ministry," Gehringer said. "Then, when she became ill, she had to learn to accept compassion."

Jan Warren, an Omaha nurse, met Brinker when the nun came to sit with her mother, who was dying of cancer.

"Sister Flo was a special lady who came into our home just when we needed her," Warren said. "All of a sudden this little old lady was in our lives, helping us through some very hard times. She knew when to say something — especially to the kids — and when to just be there for us."

Brinker is survived by her brother, Bill Brinker of St. Clair, Mich.
