US Navy

Born about 1847 Columbus Shea enlisted in the US Navy on Nov 25, 1863 and served as a 1st Class Boy on the gunboats USS Allegany and USS Ceres.

He was discharged June 11, 1865 and later received a Civil War pension.

1st, 2nd and 3rd class Boy was actually the rank of young boys that served in the Navy during the Civil War. Age 13 was the standard age for enlistment. They were often used as "powder monkeys" to run powder charges for the big naval guns.

1890 Veterans Schedule list disability of loss of hearing in right ear.
