Bertha Ruth Ewing, 88, of Albion, died about 11:38 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Visitation was held on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Nale's Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Albion, with interment at Graceland Cemetery. Ruth was born on January 22, 1918 at Ellery, Edwards county, Illinois, the daughter of George and Winnie (Woods) Chalcraft. She married Floyd W. Ewing on May 27, 1941 in Lebanon, Missouri. He preceded her in death on 27 October 1975. She was an active member for many years at the First Baptist Church in Albion until failing health. She worked with the youth group in teaching Sunday School and Bible School Activities. She was a certified school teacher in the rural schools and Albion area. Later teaching remedial reading in the Title I program until her retirement. A member of the Women's Missionary Union, the Delta Kappa gamma society International since 1979, the Retired Teachers Association and held a Life Membership at the Edwards County Historical Society in Albion. Surviving are three sons, Steve (Bev) of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Wayne (Patti) of Elizabeth, Colorado, and Gene (Kathie) of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Norma Doty of Bone Gap; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and 1 sister in law and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a sister, Allene Schmidt, brothers, Harold and Francis Chalcraft and a nephew, Tom Schmidt. Memorials may be made to the Edwards County Historical Society or the First Baptist Church in Albion.
