Dr. Floyd W. Ewing services set for Thursday afternoon.

Cancer has claimed the life of Dr. Floyd W. Ewing, 57, who had operated an Optometry office in Albion for the past 27 years. Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Dr. Ewing died Monday night at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. He had been at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis for three weeks, prior to being moved to Mt. Carmel. Dr. Ewing was a product of the Albion Public schools. He served as a pilot in the Air Force during World War II, entering service in March, 1945 [1941] and being discharged in December, 1945 as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Ewing attended Monroe College of Optometry in Chicago 1946-48 and returned to his home town to practice. Since 1958, his office has been located on the North Side of the Square. He had closed his office and retired in May, after his illness became known. Dr. Ewing was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Albion Chamber of Commerce and Edwards County Sportsman Club. He was elected as a member of the Albion Park Board several years ago and continued to serve until his death. He serced on the Edwards County Welfare Services Committee as a Democratic Party appointee by the County Board. Dr. Ewing headed the Chamber of Commerce committee to provide a new nursing home for Albion, when it was announced the previous home would be closed. The result of the community effort was Rest Haven Manor on West Main Street. Born September 11, 1918 in Wayne County [Illinois], his parents were Ralph and Luna Terrell Ewing. May 27, 1942 he was married to Ruth Chalcraft of Ellery, who survives. Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ewing of Albion; three sons, Major Steven [Stephen] Ewing, M.D., of Scott Air Base at Belleville, Wayne of Creve Coeur, Missouri (an accountant with Clayton Computer Products), and Gene, a third year medical student at University of Illinois; and a sister, Mrs. Elmo (Ruby) Root of Bone Gap. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sidney and a sister, Mrs. Opal Fewkes. Rev. Jack Pierce will officiate at the services, with Nale's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.
